How to get the most out of your health insurance

Health insurance is one of those benefits that you don’t think too much about, until you need it. Yes, it can be easy to ‘set and forget’ it. But if you’d like to make the most of your health cover, there are simple things you can do from time to time.

Here are some recommended steps, according to our SHARE advisers.

Get familiar with your policy

Do you know what’s covered and what’s not? On a regular basis (ideally once a year), it’s a good idea to run through the details of your health insurance policy and take mental note of things like covered procedures, annual limits on cover, and any exclusions that you may have.

Of course, there’s a lot of jargon involved. So, if you need help understanding the details or have some specific questions in mind, get in touch with a SHARE adviser. We breathe and speak insurance – and we’d be happy to explain it all to you in plain English.

Maximise preventive care

We all know that prevention is often the best medicine. Depending on your policy, health insurance can help you take care of your wellbeing on your ongoing basis, by covering the costs of certain regular check-ups and appointments.

Does your health cover provide an allowance or discounts on dentist appointments, optometrist visits, or GP check-ups? What about other health screening programmes and diagnostics, like bowel screening kits?

Don’t miss out on member discounts

More and more health insurance providers are acknowledging the importance of ‘holistic wellbeing’. Some may offer discounts on one-on-one nutritional consultations, sports and gym memberships, and even mental health consultations by recognised psychologists and psychiatrists.

Regularly review your cover

Lastly, the most important tip of all: make sure you review your cover regularly, once a year or even more often if something important happens to you.

As your life changes so may your insurance needs, and reviewing your health cover with a SHARE adviser can help you keep your protection plan up to date. Like to talk about it? Click here to find a SHARE adviser near you.
